Choosing Color For Your Home-Part 4

Choosing Color For Your Home-Part 4

Here, in the final of a 4 part series on color, I want to talk about-the actual selection process for choosing the paint color itself. It can be daunting! What with hundreds of different paint lines, and many more shades of each color (did you know there are 80 different whites alone?), selecting the one color to use is a process.

As a professional it is my responsibility to help my clients create and achieve their desired effect in their home through the color choices they make.  So I go through these 7 steps with each client:

  1. We look at the style of the home itself and the environment it sits in. Is it an apartment by Louis Sullivan in a big city? Or a craftsman style bungalow in a small town? Or, a Tuscan inspired villa in the countryside?
  2. Who lives there and how they want to feel in their space and what colors they look good in.
  3. What they want to use as inspiration in their home. Perhaps they are building the decor around a cherished rug or a beloved piece of art?
  4. How do they want to use the trends in color to help keep their home current and part of the times
  5. We then select the actual colors from the color deck of the line of paints they want to use.
  6. We buy a sample of the colors from the paint store-either in their small sample jars, or a quart of paint- and paint a 3 ft. by 4 ft. board (I like to use white illustration board for the best effect) and take a look at the colors in the space during different times of the day in different light, and on different walls

  7. And finally, we paint the rooms.
As paint is the quickest and least expensive way to update and refresh your home, and makes the biggest impact as a decor statement, it’s good to know how to go about selecting your paint colors. And, if you still feel overwhelmed by the process, think about hiring a professional. It’s worth a small investment to bring a decade or more of pleasure in your space, don’t you think?
