Pantone Color of the Year 2014-Radiant Orchid

Pantone Color of the Year 2014-Radiant Orchid

As you may know by now Pantone Color of the Year 2014 is announced, and it is Radiant Orchid.

The resulting commentary from the design world over the social media waves ranges from “it’s a menopausal color” to it’s “fresh and inviting”. With every conceivable thought in between. You can only imagine. It seems to be equally divided between love and hate.

For the first time in years, I have to say that personally…I like it. There, I said it! Usually I am all about tweaking it, but this time I feel they hit the nail on the head.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying to go out there and paint everything you own Radiant Orchid! NO, NO, NO! Although, it can be quite dramatic and beautiful when handled well as Amanda Nesbit did in the room below, don’t you think?

As an ex trend director, what Pantone does when announcing a color for the year is much deeper and perhaps more psychological then that.

“PANTONE Color of the Year is a reflection of what people are looking for, what they feel they need that this color can help to answer. Not necessarily the hot fashion color of the moment, but a color crossing all areas of design which is an expression of a mood, an attitude, on the part of the consumers.” via Pantone

It’s about a feeling, a color that announces the “state of the union” per say. And I think it’s fresh and inviting for sure!  Clean, crisp and a range from blue purple to pink, it feels uplifting to me and hopeful.

How the energy of this color can affect us, via my favorite color site Sensational Color:

  • Uplifts the spirit and the mind
  • Calms the mind and nerves
  • Offers a sense of spirituality
  • Encourages creativity and innovation

I can so see it in a range of purples with both blue and red undertones, striking a balance  which I think we are all looking for.
