Choosing Color For Your Home-Part 3

Choosing Color For Your Home-Part 3

In Part 3 of 4 parts on choosing color for your home I want to talk about the trends in color. When I say trends, I am not talking trendy, but rather what is happening with color from a social, cultural and industry point of view. As an ex trend director I love watching what is happening to color trends in my industry!

Knowing the trends, along with understanding how color affects you, and noticing where you can find your color inspiration are the three main points of view to think about when selecting the perfect colors for you and your family at home.

So, what are the 6 main color trends to know?

  1. Colors are lightening and brightening up-rooms feel new with these lighter cleaner shades.
  2. They are clean and fresh-gone are the dingy earth tones and traditional jewels we’ve seen in the 90’s and early 21st century.

  3. Citrus brights add pop to all other colors-think accessories, printed fabrics, rugs and art.
  4. Pearlescent or translucent finishes-think milk paint, chalk paint.
  5. Metallic finishes-with technologies help, metallic finishes in wall coverings, accessories, lamp shades and even ceilings are reflective in nature.
  6. Greige is the new neutral-After taupe and beige reigning supreme the last 20 years or so, greige, a warm mix of grey and beige is coming on strong!

To hear more about these trends, check out the video below! Part 4 of 4 will appear here next Tuesday. See you then.

And I’d love to hear from you as to your reaction to these trends and what you feel will be happening. I always love hearing from you.

  1. Hi Irene, Your color trend analysis is spot on in terms of what I am seeing also. My only addition would be that although the “dingy earth tones” are gone, I find warm earth tones to be quite prevalent, the “java” browns mixing with the “greige” like the pairing of the reclaimed wood with the industrial steel…set in a light, uncluttered room (which goes along with your observation of cleaner lighter shades).
Thank you for always having such engaging posts!

I do like how you put that Lynne. The pairing of wood and steel, also warm walnuts with greige walls etc. I probably wouldn’t paint the wall the brown, but rather bring it in with wood and texture. Point taken, love it!

Hi Irene, another great post I will be sharing! Like Lynne above, I concur. The soft brights have taken the walls and the deeps are becoming the furnishings and accents.
