Here come the Brits-Interior Decor

Besides seeing a lot of vintage signs in interior design photos, I’ve also notice the use of the British Flag as a decor motif. Hmmmmmm…I really don’t know what I think of that, but must admit that it looks kind of cool. But, is it a color statement? A nationality statement? Or a political statement? Or could it be because of the latest lens on the Royal Family?

The first time I saw it was as a rug by Vivienne Westwood, the quirky and very talented British fashion designers. Her rug has shown up  in many magazines, books and is all over the internet. It “looks” good in this setting:

Certainly I think it’s easier to understand when it’s hung on the wall. It then becomes a bit of art:

I’ve also seen the British flag on pillows, upholstery fabric, coffee mugs and all sorts of other accessories:

The other big Brit wave that has traveled across the water, and in fact ties in to my vintage sign post is the inspirational quote, and great reminder to “Keep Calm and Carry On”, complete with the British Crown emblem. I particularly love it as you walk in or out the door in an entryway, as entryways are a physical and metaphorical way to move from the outside to the inside and back out again. What a great reminder!

As with so many trends there is a cross over between the fashion world and the interior design world.

So, I guess the question is, do we here in America think that our American flag will also make an interior design statement?

What do you think of this “flag” trend? Please leave a comment below, I’m really curious as to what you think!

Personally, I think that using any country’s flag as a rug where people walk on it is disrespectful. Would you want people to walk on the USA flag? Then why should we walk on the flag of another country?

Used as a wall hanging where people can admire it as a work of art and representation of that country’s history is another matter, and works for me.

And for a model to use it as a prop where it’s being held like a rag and touching the floor is another sign of disrespect and should be avoided.

But that’s just my humble opinion…

Yes, I must admit that I have a bit of the same reaction myself. I’m a bit surprised to see it appearing so much in the magazines, that’s for sure. Thanks for stopping by Beryn

I love the use of the British Flag as a decorative motif. I also find flag motif classic. In America we have Federal, Colonial, and Early American Interior Design, that has celebrate the use of the red, white and blue flag motif for Centuries. I personally dig it!

If I were British, I’d use the Union Jack. I’d feel like I was bandwaggoning if I used it since I’m from the good ol’ USA. It would be like Madonna with a British accent. Oh, she did do that didn’t she?

I compltetely agree with the above comment. The flag should not be on the floor for anyone to step on under any circumstances. The flag is the symbol of our beloved country and therefore should be treated with love and respect.

I am looking for British flag upholstery fabric for a large ottoman…do you know where I can find it by the yard?

    Thanks!
