8 Tips & Trick for Hallway Designs

8 Tips & Trick for Hallway Designs

I have to start this post with the fact that I don’t like hallways.  Nope, not at all.  I find them to be a waste of space, and those that people create through a room to get from one point to another are even worse.  Having said that, most homes have at least one, and besides tearing the house down and starting over, there is not much you can do to get rid of them.  So I say, use them. Here are a few tips and tricks as to what you can do with your hallway:

  1. Create a focal point: highlight a window or a door at the end of the hall, or build a reading bench; light a special piece of art; create a niche to house a photo or statue; place a special item just so
  2. Create a photo gallery-my favorite, with family pictures, but any “series” of photos will work, and create a mosaic on the wall
  3. Create Storage-particularly if there is a staircase involved, you can use the “dead space” underneath for storage, or for display shelving (use for books, toys, artifacts)
  4. Open up the hallway to a living room, dining room or outside area with windows, open shelving, fish tanks, or half walls
  5. Create a entryway with a piece of furniture such as a bench, or console; use a mirror or piece of art over; create a vignette to add interest and voila, your hallway becomes an entryway.
  6. If your hallway is a bit wider, consider turning it into your library.  Standard shelving can be as narrow as 10 inches to hold most books.  This creates a perfect use for an otherwise dead space.
  7. Anchor your hallway with a runner.
  8. Make sure your lighting is good: use all the natural light through windows that you can; spot lights to highlight art; skylights for natural daylight; ceiling lights mixed with sconces

How do you create a statement, and a Little Bit of Beauty™  in your hallway?  I’d love to know!
