Mixing it all up with an edgy twist is the key to pulling together your home in 2011 and beyond. By mixing we create a more personal look. Gone are the matching pieces and in comes the layered look, all the better if collected over time and tell the story of your life. Also, pay attention to:
- unusual color mixes
- mix of texture, such as rough and rustic with smooth and modern
- re-purposed items from your past with a nod to Green
These five looks can all tell a story, preferably yours, and create a mood that is filled with atmosphere and personal memories. 1. Wallpaper: While this may not be my favorite trend, it is definitely making a comeback. If I have to pick a favorite style in wallpaper, I’d select as #1, chinoiserie. Dramatic, bold, traditional yet it can mix with modern pieces as well as antiques. It becomes the art in and of itself, although I also love it layered with art. My second fav…geometric patterns, in neutral or bold color combos.

2. Industrial Edge: Edgy seems to be the trend word of the year and I do think it applies to Industrial. This trend is inspired from the re-use, re-purpose trend that is part of the Green movement and a trend we will see for some time to come. From the industrial re-use of old barn lights and furniture pieces, to old vintage signs, and not just in lofts either; layered with mid-century modern designed by some of the greats from Thonet to Arne Jacobsen. This look is influenced by our love for Mad Men and the resurgence of barn renovations, plus baby boomer memorabilia made new again.
3. Globe Trotting: I am seeing the influence of pieces and fabrics collected over many travels (or looking like they have been) in many of the homes I visit. Each piece recalls an experience had by those who wander far and wide. These remembrances are layered over time and influence our space to create a scrape book so to speak of our lives and interests. This to me is by far one of the most interesting trends…perhaps because I am a traveler at heart?
4. Euro Country: Chic mixes (again, that word, mixing) with influences from Scandinavia, Mediterranean Countries and Raw Modern combine and layer to create a look that, again, has evolved over time. This includes using old world materials such as Carrera marble in kitchens; and a combination of old world with sleek and modern. Especially found in very functional kitchens, you’ll see the mix of modern day professional appliances mixed with antique tables from the old country; to living spaces mixing modern comfort with old world finds.
5. Books as a Key Accessory: Books seem to be making the news in the interior design world. Perhaps it’s because it helps to balance out our tech world of ipad and kindle? Or, perhaps because picking up a book, smelling it, turning the pages is still a part of the texture of life. Nothing reveals the personal interests of the inhabitants in a home faster then scanning book titles. So, for a home that’s filled with personality, accessorize with books!
