I think by now most of you have heard the Oscar nominated song for Despicable Me 2, Pharrell Williams “Happy”, now an International Phenomenon.
It came out as the first 24 hour music video when some Pharrell fans filmed a dance clip to the song and sent it to him. Thus began the musical sensation and original video as Pharrell traveled around filming people singing and dancing to his song.
The response was an overnight sensation! Today there are home made and professionally made videos of happy dancers and singers from around the world. From the Philippines to India, Tuscany to Portugal and on, and on, and on. As Pharrell said on Oprah, it’s really no longer his song as everyone seems to be making their own take.
What does that say to me? While many people would like to judge the state of our world by the depressing evening news and the newspapers, the people are saying that they are, and they want to be “Happy”! With his song, Pharrell has created a vehicle that speaks to people. I know that every time I listen to it I want to clap and get up and move.
So, recently when my family got together for a family reunion on the North Shore of Oahu we made it our own. Four Generations, in one house, including 4 month old twins and a 2 year old, plus three teens and 10 adults! My parents in their 80’s and my two sisters and I looked at each other as it began to rain and thought…oh oh. We quickly decided to be Happy and create our very own video.
This of course lead to choreography (sort of), practice, and many many moments of laughter and good times. Check out our results in the video below. I think it was one of the best family reunions all the way around, with great memories all stored in this one video.
Don’t you want to be “Happy”? Many thanks to Pharrell Williams for creating this song…
“Clap along if you feel that Happiness is the truth!”
