Downton Abbey & Style

Downton Abbey & Style

The much awaited 3rd season premiered here in America, and we were watching. It did not disappoint! At least in my book. I first wrote about Downton Abbey in March of 2011. Loved it then and love it today!

It occurred to me as I was watching it that the times we live in today have much in common with the 1920’s as depicted in this show.

We too are going through a transformation of the world as we know it. And like the DA characters, there are some of us who can and will change, and some of us who can’t and won’t. Interesting to contemplate, don’t you think?

But the one line of the night that stood out for me was this…

If you are tired of style, you are tired of life!”

I agree…don’t you? What did you think of the show? Are you a fan? And what do you think of style, in fashion, home and life in general? Curious….

yes indeed!

true, don’t you think?

Some of us can not embrace change (Old white guys in congress) but DA characters that are older have an unexpected ability to change. Sending money to Sybil and her husband to come for the wedding is a good example.
Being tired of style only happens when you have given up.

I agree wholeheartedly regarding change Connie. It’s not an age thing. Both Dame Maggie (sending the money as you say) and Shirley McClaine, as well as with the young people…Sybil vs Mary. It’s simply in you or not as Ms. McClaine stated. Much to think about…and yes, for style lovers, you only loose your love of style when all else is gone too.

I love DA and the beauty of that time period. I enjoy the deliberate, elegant manners and gentle grace that is part of daily life -but I especially love that gorgeous home!! Even with the upcoming changes, I do imagine the characters will keep their gracious natures but will be tempered to stand up to the winds of change.

I agree Debbie. In my first blog I wrote all about the house. It truly is the star of the show. The English are doing everything they can to keep these old homes up, and it’s not easy! I just wrote a blog post on the Biltmore Estate. With American ingenuity they have managed to be totally self sufficient and are still a private estate. Of course the house is not nearly as old as Highclere castle. Therefore easier to still maintain. I wish the real owners luck in the maintenance of their castle for sure!

I absolutely adore DA–from my first viewing I was hooked–perhaps we all love it so because represents much that is lacking in our own culture–and certainly we can’t live in a home such as this-but I feel that we have a deep hunger for the style-class-and the manners which was so much a part of their lives–The world is changing–some good–some not so much–but hopefully we will hold onto those nicites that we cherish~~~this is going to be a most exciting series this year~~~
