I finally saw the movie Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky last night, about 4 months late as it came to the USA in September of 2010!
If you follow me here, you know I LOVE Chanel! Between her feminist liberation of the female body, to her timeless perfume and her innate sense of style in everything she did, and of course the clothes, Coco Chanel was a “change agent” of her time. I first wrote about her in the movie Coco Before Chanel in November of 2009. In it Audrey Tautou who played a young Coco was incredible, and the movie was visual eye candy. In this movie Anna Mouglalis as Coco in her prime is simply stunning, and…the visual feast continues!
She and Mads Mikkelsen as Igor together are very sexy.
The clothes are magnificent as you can imagine!
The movie showcases to perfection both Chanel’s signature black and white color palette from her fabulous clothes to the black and white/neutral interior set design of her shop and country home in classic early 20th century style. From the antique furniture and accessories, to the perfect backdrops like: the black painted moldings and outdoor window trim, cubic wallpaper, fabulous rugs and black and gold Chinoiserie folding screen, every last detail brings to life this amazing woman’s sense of style.
I know I was suppose to get all caught up in Coco and Igor in love, instead my fashionista’s heart was salivating over the clothes, and my interior designers eye was checking out every detail of her country house! And, it was not your typical warm and cozy country house, but one that shocked and stunned the senses, while displaying her incredible style, grace and elegance. It even shows her process in the creation of her infamous Chanel 5 perfume. At the end of the day, Igor’s mistake was to not see Coco’s vision as art…poor man!
I leave you with a quote from Coco, one that makes me so happy as it speaks to my personal interior design philosophy.
An interior is the natural projection of the soul – Coco Chanel
and another, in which I would personally change Fashion to A Little Bit of Beauty™!
Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. Coco Chanel
If you like modern dance, you’ll love the beginning of the movie, if not…skip ahead about 18 minutes and get right to the story. Check it out, and let me know what you think of it. I’d love to know!
