Wisteria-Sonoma Style

Wisteria-Sonoma Style

It’s wisteria season again, and my back yard is filled with these luscious blooms and divine scent! Just last week I posted a picture of my wisteria in bloom on Facebook which elicited a tremendous response, so I thought I’d share more.

Looking into my bathroom window

When my husband and I bought our home 8 years ago it was considered a fixer upper to put it nicely. But, being an interior designer, and my husband a Real Estate Broker, we looked past the ruble and checked out the bones. Nothing sold us more on this house over others then the 25 foot by 25 foot wisteria arbor in the back yard…no matter the neglect. When we first saw it, it was held up by 9 wood posts. The trunk and arms were so heavy that they all slanted and we couldn’t even walk underneath.

Before we got to work!

So, when we finished our first phase of remodeling on the inside, Ron and his son’s got to work on the arbor. They jacked up the heavy arms with car jacks and poles. We found an engineer who’s hobby was welding and he built us a truss with 4 corner posts out of steel. We installed, and voila, It became a functional outdoor room.

It needed steel to hold up the large trunk and it’s very long and heavy branches. These branches are bigger then my upper arm!

During the blooming season, which lasts about one month out of the year, it smells heavenly. As it sits right outside our master bedroom, we keep the windows open and enjoy the scent 24 hours a day. We have to walk under, and through it everyday on our way to our hot tub (I live in Northern California you know).

We have a daybed from India siting underneath every season except winter, that provides the perfect place for a nap. When it is in bloom as it is now I love lying under the mosquito net, with the sound of the bees buzzing away. It’s white noise that puts me out in a minute.

The daybed becomes a nap haven

And in the hot summer days it provides a shaded area that always is at least 10 degrees cooler.

We enjoy many a moment with our family and friends, sitting in our comfy daybed.

And we hold tea parties for the kids or outdoor parties for the adults under this great outdoor living space!

Wisteria is a little bit of beauty™, and between the scent, and the lovely blooms can transport you with it’s beauty for sure!

What’s one of your favorite rooms in your home? Do you enjoy outdoor space? Tell me about it, I always love hearing your stories and your ideas! Happy Spring to you all.

irene–I hardly know what to comment on first–Guess I will start with the darling little girls–this was sometime ago but even still what a sweet picture–love the one of Ron and his granddaughter–how precious is that!!
The wisteria is a work of art–I had it also in Texas and Virginia and am very familiar with that divine fragrance!! To have it right outside of your bedroom window–how romantic is that11
Isn’t fun taking a house and throwing yourselves into the remodel to make it home –love doing things like that–so much of that is taking place now due to low interest rates–you can save a bundle and get a wonderful house in the long run–
Thanks so much for sharing such wonderful pictures of your yard and always your family–
    have a wonderful weekend !!!!!
