Keep Calm and Carry on
This simple five-word message was and is the very model of British restraint and stiff upper lip. In 1939, with war against Germany looming, the British Government designed three posters to steady the public’s resolve and maintain morale. These featured the crown of King George VI set against a bold red background, and three distinctive slogans – “Freedom is in Peril”, “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory”, and “Keep Calm and Carry On”. Keep Calm and Carry On was intended to be released in a big way should Britain ever be invaded. Since they weren’t, the posters disappeared. The message was all but forgotten until 2000, when a copy was discovered in a box of books bought at auction in Northumberland. Today, this message has risen in popularity again. Makes sense doesn’t it? After all we live in tumultuous times. And I for one am all for writing out a mantra, slogan or favorite quote to help us remember our message to ourselves throughout our day. AND, I really like this reminder to keep calm in the midst of our go, go, go society! My favorite form is as a rug, by our main entrance is good. This one from Anthropologie is one of my favorites.
I also think this saying works really well in our work space, kitchen or children’s room, where ever you need reminding to keep calm!
There are of course all kinds of other tchotchkes with the Keep Calm and Carry On message. From mugs, totes, aprons, and biscuts, to key rings, tea shirts and even deck chairs!
So, what’s your favorite saying? Could you see it displayed in your home in some way? What, how? Leave me a message, I’d love to find out.
In the meantime, Keeping Calm and Carry On is definitely a Little Bit of Beauty™ advice for sure!

I use…”Golden opportunities are everywhere for me” by Louise L. Hay. Positive affirmations really work!

I love this message Irene! Thank you!!! ♥♥♥
It is perfect for these times 🙂 I have two messages that I have posted around my home: “You have no limits, you limit yourself.” and the other one is “Never look down! Keep looking… Upward and Forward!”
But I think I will have to add Keep Calm and Carry On!!!! The message on the rug at the entrance is perfect – not only a reminder throughout the day, but a reminder as you go out to your day.
Thank you for sharing this! ♥-

Irene, thanks for the history behind the “Keep Calm” slogan. I had no idea of the history behind it. I generally don’t have slogans and as I don’t like to be a copycat, the “Keep Calm” and other slogans won’t be in my house. Having said that, I do love the affirmation Lisa posted above and I haven’t seen it posted on almost every blog…yet. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by Monique. This is one of the reasons I love blogging and having people comment. We are all so different and enjoy different things, making different statements in our homes. I am sure your are uniquely you…and I believe in that!

This is such a great message – and cute to have on rugs and wall hangings! If I was going to have something like this displayed at my house, I think I would want it to say something with a similar message – I’ve always liked “Keep On Trucking” or “Just Keep Swimming” – like from Finding Nemo! So cute. 🙂

What a cute idea! I really like the outdoor lounge chairs… Might have to get a few of these for the beach or pool!
