Yes, I’ll admit it, at heart I’m still a New York Girl. I LOVE that city. I think what I love the most about it is that it’s constantly changing. Never more apparent then with the advent of an Apple store in the historic Grand Central Station!
Opening to the public this past Friday, December 9, 2011, this mega-apple-store is located behind the east and northeast balconies, overlooking the main concourse. It offers three Genius bars, 15 minute express workshops, and dedicated rooms where people can set up new devices and learn how to operate them. Apple occupy’s the 23,000 square feet where Charlie Palmers Metrazur’s restaurant was and employs 315 people to help the roughly 75,000 people that will pass through the terminal per day, according to Huffington Post. Apple was also restricted in it’s traditional brand decor and challenged to fit in with the current architecture of this historical Beaux Art building.
Always on the cutting edge of design from their products to their stores, I think they succeeded spectacularly! The coolness factor wins out again, all the while fitting in beautifully in one of the biggest landmark buildings in New York city.
My next trip to my home town will include some time in one of my favorite buildings…Grand Central Station; part time at the Oyster Bar, a long time at the Apple store, and then drinks at my favorite lounge, Campbell Apartment. Sigh, I can’t wait!
I believe Steve Jobs would have been proud! What do you think?
