I love the city of Palm Springs! From old world Spanish architecture, classic mid-century modern homes once owned by such luminaries as the Rat Pack and Cary Grant; to unique furniture stores and the best re-sell furniture shops around…Palm Springs is definitely a destination for those serious about finding unusual and one of kind items for their home. And not just mid-century either. Last week I spent three days in PS taking care of an installation for a client of mine. My friend Eileen was kind enough to take me on a tour of the newest hot destination in town called the Uptown Design District.
Located along the stretch of Palm Canyon Drive from Alejo Road north to Tachevah Drive, it is a small area that includes some of the best restaurants in town, modern art galleries, fabulous antiques, floor and tile shops and of course the renowned modern & vintage stores filled with finds both new and resell from well known local residences. Some of my favs:
- Michael H. Lord Gallery for a terrific array of modern artists including Frank Stella, Joan Miró, and Robert Mapplethorpe to two of my new favorites-the undulating comic strip landscapes by Don Morris and the young and sublimely talented Carlo D’Alessio’s galaxy of photorealism paintings.
- 20 First Modern and Vintage Furnishings for truly one of a kind mid century pieces.
- House 849 with the most unusual and well priced antiques I’ve seen in a long time. The store is a global treasure trove!
- Insolito Home, a shop that has truly found modern, one of a kind art items as home furnishings from around the world!
- The Famous Dazzles, the longest shop on the strip, 25 years! With 50’s modern memorabilia, including bright quirky plastic jewelry, hats, accessories and fab furniture finds from some of the high profile celebrities who’ve trotted through the valley.
- To the bold and dashing Trina Turk Boutique filled with retro prints and bright splashes of color for the home inside and out.
And of course many, many more stores. It’s important to note that most stores are closed Monday and Tuesdays, with some even closed on Wednesday…at least off season when I was there. There are plenty of great restaurants to lunch in on your shopping foray from the hip Trio to the fun Cheeky’s (love the name) to some of the best Thai food I’ve had in a long time, Thai Smile!

Hi Lynne, I did take the pics. some with my iphone, some with my Canon. There were so many items that I shot, that it was hard to choose what to showcase in this post. I didn’t actually buy anything as I wasn’t shopping for a client or myself, but rather doing recognizance for future projects down in the desert. It really is fabulous shopping!
Thanks for stopping by: )

Those white leather side chests look beautiful. I haven’t been to Palm Springs in years but my family goes every August (cheaper in the summer for obvious reasons), I think I may have to venture back out there to check out the Uptown Design District. Sounds (and looks ) lovely.
