As an Interior Designer I’ve completed coastal projects from Cabo San Lucas up through Southern California and right on up here to the Sonoma Coast; and, on the east coast from South Beach to New York. Clients in these locals-and including Palm Springs where the sun is merciless-express a desire for indoor/outdoor interiors that can withstand daily life. This means with big windows to be able to see fantastic views (why would you want to close the curtains on that?), with easy access directly into nature, that also let in lot’s of harmful sun rays. Plus the daily reality of everyone walking in and out, constantly.
The question they all have is-if they are going to invest a lot of money creating a beautiful home (and often times their second or third home), how can they justify doing so and still enjoy living in it comfortably and without worrying about the durability of their furniture for the long haul? Well, upholstry, accessories, rugs and protective window coverings have come a long way Babe! Check out…Sunbrella. After 50 years in business, they have now also nailed residential fabrics!
Last week when I attended the Design Bloggers Conference in LA I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Joe Ruggiero and the Sunbrella team. Joe designs a fabulous fabric line for Sunbrella that is chic, trend right and elegant while Sunbrella as a company has addressed fabric maintenance for our world today…beautifully! From window coverings (sheers, awnings, roller shades and more),
to natural rugs made from recycled materials, fabulous and yummy throws, and rich soft upholstery fabrics, Sunbrella helps to maintain the look of your home for years to come.
Awnings and shades truly help your investment in your home by:
- Reducing heat gain in summer and helps reduce cooling energy costs up to 60%.
- Protecting delicate flooring, antiques and fabrics from the sun’s harsh rays.
- Blocking the sun and protecting the interior without obstructing views.
- Creating intimate room scapes outdoors
Sunbrella Fabrics are durable and easy to clean, plus:
- The color is added at the liquid stage so they stay true over time
- They are mildew- and mold-resistant, so don’t worry about sitting on them with wet bathing suits
- They are easy to clean – you can use bleach if needed.
- There is a 5-year warranty for furniture fabrics and 10-year for awning fabrics
- And, best of all, they look great!
And, of course, they are environmentally friendly because they are:
- Fully recyclable
- Create no waste water from dyeing
- GREENGUARD certified for indoor air quality
- Offer significant sun protection
- And are extremely durable and long lasting
Best of all they range from elegant bedroom fabrics
To refined and graceful living space fabrics
All in scrumptious color ways, from velvets
to more traditional weaves in fun patterns!
Who says you can’t have function and fashion? AND, not just on the coast, but EVERYWHERE! So, protect your home investment and think Sunbrella. I invite you to leave me a comment and let me know what you think of these Sunbrella Fabrics. I bet Sunbrella would love to hear too
And, if you want some help putting your beautiful and fool proof home together go ahead and Contact Me…I’d love to help you.

You’ve written a great article about a truly talented entrepreneur in our business. And the pictures are a wonderful representation of both the product and Joe’s skills as a designer of all things for the home. He really understands the needs we have as designers. Kudos to yu both!

Actually, the thanks go to you. When ever I tell my clients about residential fabrics by sunbrella, they don’t believe me. so….now, I can show them before I even start pulling samples. I’d love to see a source list for the trade on your site…ie;where in SF can I get the velvets, the chenilles, the awning fabrics etc. It would be really helpful.LOVE your product

Hi Irene,
I really enjoyed seeing this collection of Sunbrella fabrics, especially the ones designed by Joe Ruggerio! There really is nothing better than fabrics that can withstand the elements and look great at the same time. Even here in Calgary we have to deal with very intense, damaging sunlight and these kind of fabrics are the answer to a designer’s prayers!

Indeed. I have completely agreed on this excellent article. Outdoor furniture is one of the little luxuries of life. Sunbrella is a tough fabric suited for all kinds of weather though the texture looks like they are only meant for indoor use. Cleaning the sunbrella cushions is so easy too. Simply rinse them in some water and leave them to dry. For cleaning spots, use the guide that comes with them for all the ingredients required to remove stains easily. Sunbrella is a great option for any of your design needs. Moreover, Sunbrella has strong commitment to environment. I have really comprehend the well-written article you have posted. Thanks a lot for the valuable and useful information. It really helps a lot to individual.

Hi, nice blog.

Living in South Florida, I’ve been familiar with Sunbrella for years but was surprised to see the wealth of fabrics and textures. Just beautiful and an absolute necessity here if you want to keep your textiles looking good for an extended period of time.

Just looking at these photos was a lovely break for me! I don’t see interior design in my future, but I love color and texture (love the texture on the photo with the little girl on the rug). The variety of colors and shades are just beautiful. Very much enjoyed. Sometimes I use images of color just to stimulate memory and reflection.

oooh – this post makes me want to pick up and move to Southern CA and make a whole house decorated in sunbrella fabrics…except I am stuck in dreary PA….counting the minutes until summer.
As always – I love your use of photos in your post! Rachel-

now ladies, this is indoor fabric, so even if it’s not hot, you can keep your curtains open all the time because the sun can’t hurt your fabrics, and if you have kids and pets, very easy to clean. It truly isn’t outdoor or coastal fabric anymore! Really! The velvets are great…spill red wine and wipe it up…light color fabrics with pets and kids, you can use bleach to clean. Just saying! and I’m glad you stopped by, thanks for your kind words…

I feel like Rachel – we’d get to use those beautiful fabrics for such a short time here. I want to move to Cali anyway so I’ll keep this in mind for when I do:)

With our west-facing back, I am intimate with awnings, didn’t know that sunbrella was used on indoor furniture and so beautifully!

That’s what most people do Brandy, cover their furniture. Now you don’t have to do that, isn’t that nice! Definitely food for thought when you redo anything next time!

Sunbrella is a brand name, like kleenex or scotch tape. It’s sold in many places and there are knock offs. But most of the good outdoor furniture is covered in Sunbrella fabric, and yes they are now moving indoors. If you ever use it Julie, yo will love the ability to clean and maintain for a long time!

I had never heard of Sunbrella until now either, but oh my gosh, what gorgeous fabrics and colors! I love the gorgeous photos you shared here and will definitely keep this in mind for the future when I may be able to do something like this in my own home.

Hi Irene,
Thanks for these beautiful pictures. I sense the strong hand of a sensitive designer crafted your presentation.
I love sunshine, having moved to California from Buffalo back in the early 1970s. My home has lots of big windows, and these stunning photos fuel my imagination. Let’s see what happens.

Thanks for the comprehensive article on Sunbrella. It makes my mouth water. Technology is making so many things possible these days….ie. velvet outdoor fabric. Who knew? I think this is going to take over the fabric world. Love your blog >I plan to visit often.
