Home Accessory Alert! Flokati Rugs

Home Accessory Alert! Flokati Rugs

Every now and then I love posting a favorite product or new trend in accessorizing for your home. Today, I want to talk about sheepskin or flokati rugs! Now, I’m going to date myself by saying I remember when these were all the rage back in the 60’s and early 70’s, and yes, it’s sometimes hard to see yourself recycle back around as a revived trend. But I liked these rugs then, and I like them now!

Flokati rugs originally come from Greece, are made of 100% New Zealand wool and are hand woven on a loom using a centuries-old process. The tradition of Flokati rug making began in the 5th century. To use the name “Flokati,” the Greek government requires that all Flokati rugs be washed in the waterfalls of the Pindus Mountains for approximately 40 hours. By tradition, detergent is not used. Instead, the high pressure of the waterfalls cleanses the wool and causes the back of the rug to shrink, making the pile thicker. What starts out as coarse yarn ends as thick, soft fluff. Flokati’s are then hung out to dry. To me they just feel so yummy when you set your feet down first thing on a cold morning, and of course wonderful to lay or sit on, throw over a chair or a stool, or use as accessories in pillows and furniture pieces.

I think they look great in just about any setting from modern environments to eclectic and traditional rooms. Plus they now come in many exciting colors!

And, you can find them from Ikea to genuine Greek imports. They are not overly priced where ever they come from. They’re also not as hard to take care of as it might seem. Yes, they do require some care, but this care ranges from shaking, airing and washing your rug…then brushing out with a dog brush! Not so bad.

So tell me, would you use a flokati in your home? Where? I’d love to know. In the meantime, more inspiration in the video below. Cheers!

I grew up with Flokati. My mom had this double height ceiling room with windows from floor to ceiling. White travertine floors, and huge white flokati rug. Blue and white fabrics, and all kinds of white furniture. That room was heavenly. I still remember it with such fondness. So besides my love of all things Greek from a young girl, feeling the pleasure of walking on that pile of softness is a joy that bears repeating. So yes to Flokati, dolmas and retsina!

Loved these rugs waaaay back then, and, like mini-skirts and hot pants, I believe that if you’re old enough to remember them from the last time they were popular, you’re too old to have them now. But that’s just my humble opinion. People who have them today will probably say the same thing 50 years from now too! 😉

  5. Beautiful rugs! I love the tie dyed one in the first picture, I kinda want something like that for our living room!
