Geneva Switzerland-Interior Design Project

My clients apartment is in this lovely building in the Champel District of Geneva

I’m back from Geneva! Yes, it was a fabulous trip…and…it’s always great to come home isn’t it? And, of course, that was the purpose of this trip, to create a home. It was not to design an interior space, but rather to consult with two adults, in mid age, combining two separate and completed households, merging two distinctly different styles and creating their first home together…in a much smaller space…in Geneva Switzerland, far from family and friends! Yes, quite a feat for them wouldn’t you say? It was a pleasure and a privilege to be able to consult with them through out the process, from our first meeting in Nashville where we edited each house into three piles:

  • get rid of
  • store
  • send to Geneva
And then, two weeks in Geneva as we set up their new home. As is expected with the Swiss, the container arrived on time. The local paint and handyman help I found through an introduction by an American friend on FB was on time, fast, reliable and we communicated in a combo of high school French and Spanish! Bottom line, we accomplished 95% of what I was hoping to accomplish, 110% of what my clients wanted to accomplish.

The charming pig on clown figure we found at the flee market…lending personality plus!

What did I not get done? I wanted to get the sheers for all the windows and put them up, finish finding rug pads for all the rugs, and find, plus install the last of the chandeliers for three of the rooms. Alas alack, we ran out of time and energy! BUT, we did make it to the fabulous Geneva Flee Market, known as PlainPalais, and to the Loire Valley and a couple of Brocantes (“junk” fairs) and found some fun and fabulous items to add to their home.

The tea tray to the left, a flee market find; The two white ceramics by the fireplace, a brocante find; the great painting above the FP, painted by my clients 17 year old daughter! Fab, don’t you think?

So, between what we culled from both homes in Nashville, and what we found there with our eagle eye, we have created a home that I think reflects the two of them very well, and is incredibly comfortable with private space for each of them and wonderful living space to share. Perfect for a later in life marriage, in a new country…HOME.
Have you merged two households in mid life? If so, what was the most difficult aspect of creating one home out of two?
As a service business, I find that not only do I help my clients with the aesthetics and design of their home, but also act as counselor to my clients through all kinds of unusual situations.
Throughout it all, it is indeed a little bit of beauty™ to help create a personal and beautiful home for all my clients!

glad I finally stopped by to view what you had been up to in Geneva! It looks lovely and comfortable indeed! I think I would absolutely die for that fabulous tea tray!
I love your question: have you combined 2 homes mid-life…and what was difficult?
oh, Irene, the stories I could tell of me the extremely passionate American primitives and antiques lover that married the IKEA luvin’ minimalist Swede…
    and how that got combined…
they’re probably not fit for a public page…..but the question surely did give me a laugh!
Lovely job in Geneva! I’m sure they love it!

Oh Karen, I do hope we really meet in the Loire. I’d love to hear those stories…I can only imagine. I actually went to Nashville first to review furniture and things from both sides…three piles, sell, store and ship. Then helped them set up over there. I think there could be a full time job in this. I can’t even begin to imagine. At least when I met my husband, he was very recently divorced, so all he had was technology! Lucky me…and we renovated during courtship, so I pretty much got my way!LOL
