What does your front door say about you and your home? Your entry door is the just that, a point of entry. And as such, some people can agonize over the choice of their front door.
Then there are many who don’t think much about their front door at all, entering their homes through the garage so many times they go days without seeing the front. We may not think about it, but how do others see our front door?
- Is it warm and welcoming?
- Is it fun and inviting?
- Is it well kept?
- Does it reflect the personalities and lifestyle of the people living there?
- Does it enhance the building itself?
- Is it easy to spot and say “this is the way in”?
A new front door can be a relatively inexpensive way to change the look and feel of your home. It may also add to the energy efficiency of your home. And of course the color can speak volumes for the personality of the house and it’s inhabitants! Changing the color of your front door is one of the quickest ways to spiff up your home’s curb appeal. Here is just a hint of what it might say:
- Blue-a blue front door signals that the homeowner views the home as a place of refuge, calm, serene, and relaxing, the perfect retreat from an often harsh and demanding world.
- Green-connotes health, safety, tranquility, and harmony, all highly desirable attributes for the home environment.
- Black-a black front door, projects strength, sophistication, power, and authority, indicating to all who enter or even passersby that the home is a serious place inhabited by a person of substance.
- Red-by painting the front door red, the homeowner is saying that the home is a vibrant place, full of life, energy, and excitement.
- Brown-whether painted or stained, brown can convey warmth, stability, and reliability, but certain darker shades of brown signal a desire for privacy, even isolation.
- Yellow-indicates a warm, sunny and confident personality.
- Orange-appears to be stimulating and filled with joy and enthusiasm.
- open and transparent with lot’s of glass
- closed and formal with a thick wood door
- modern and chic
- or, traditional and stable

We believe If a front door is lacking, consider adding something green to the area. Getting several plants of varying height, it can add both a personal touch as well as bringing visual interest.
A bench is another good way to focus interest in this area of the house. Guests can feel welcome to sit down, or they can use the bench as a resting place. For such a simple piece of furniture, it looks great. This article is such a great source of ideas and inspirations. Thanks for sharing!-

You are absolutely right GRNY Renovation. Accessories all help, but the door is the foundation, isn’t it?

Certainly! The front door makes up 90% of the overall impact of any home’s exterior and it’s the only chance to make a great first impression! So investing some effort to beautify this area will definitely bring a great return. We usually like to make a statement by giving a front door a blast of color with paint or by installing a custom wood frame. By the way, colors are a great form of non-verbal communication, and your hints about its meaning might help homeowners to figure it out which color works better for them. Great article! Cheers 😉

Hello Irene,
I love your website. I was introduced to it by my old friend Amanda Kreglow who often shares your posts on her FB page. Anyhow, you are incredibly talented and i love learning from you. I would love your help with my entry, or any room in my home! My problem is that the home is now worth 100K less than i paid for it and i still owe 300K on the mortgage, so i can’t justify putting more money into it, even though there is lots i’d like to do. Is that crazy thinking? Thanks! Jennifer (PS it is a lovely home and i do love it)-

Hi Jennifer, thanks so much for your very kind words, and for signing up! Yes, I do love Amanda, and look forward to seeing her this weekend.
I do understand about the value of your home vs what you owe, and investing more into it. My husband and I have the same issue. So, a couple of thoughts…my hubby is a real estate broker, and yes, the market is finally going up again. While the market value of our house is currently less then what we owe, and we still need to invest more into it to finish the renovation (over 6 figures) we will be here awhile, like you love our location, and enjoy living here. So, like all my clients, we will renovate on a very strict budget, and when we can really afford it. It is still an investment, AND our home. I hope that helps you look at your possibilities in a different light. I look forward to seeing you pop up again, and you can get daily inspiration on my Irene Turner at Home biz page on Facebook!
