What is it about old farmhouse tables that seems to have such allure? They’ve always been around-from the old world country tables to the new knock offs available on line and beyond. I know I’ve always appreciated them, but never more then now living here in Sonoma County Wine Country!
I believe we are in the midst of a revival. Perhaps due in part to the whole-farm to table “slow food” movement, as well as the new open floor plans found in so many new homes where the dining/living space all flows together, and on into the kitchen. Or, perhaps it is due to our American love affair with all things country French and Italian wine country in style. What ever the reason, farmhouse tables are in vogue. There is just something about the patina, the history; all those stains and nicks…it feels like it has so many stories to tell, doesn’t it? It’s the perfect place for the whole family, and so much better then a formal table. You simply don’t have to worry about adding your own history! Where can you use old farmhouse tables?
- In a country home
- In a modern setting
- In a formal dining room
- In a open floor plan
- In the middle of your kitchen
- In natural wood
- In color
- In an apartment
- In a mansion
- In the entry way
- Outside-dining al fresco
- EVERYWHERE!
Of course I think the very best one’s are the authentic old ones. But, having said that there are some great reclaimed wood tables and tables that are made to look old (but not fake)! I don’t have one myself, but must admit…when we do our kitchen remodel I will work on finding the perfect one for our home. Here in Sonoma County I’ll probably shop at Sonoma Country Antiques. They always seem to have a great selection. What do you think of old Farmhouse tables? Do you have one? Would you want one? Leave me a comment, I always love to hear from you!
In the meantime, for more ideas, check out the video below. Cheers!

Love, love, love that table shown from Southern Charm. We have an antique farm table that is our main table and we adore it. It has nicks from dining and homework and life, but it makes it richer.

Second photo…table aside, what’s not to like about a vaulted brick ceiling! Third photo…I love the rather Zen all white kitchen w/ the farm table as “hero” in the center of the kitchen….I also love the thickly painted rustic and massive green table. The juxtaposition of thick table and shiny almost marine-finish thick paint….very cool….lastly, eating outside under dappled light from a ceiling trellis of sticks? Wonderful. I ate lunch in a small northern Peruvian town where the entire ceiling was open to the elements like this…gorgeous light. Had the national dish of dried beef reconstituted w/ vegetables….as one looked into the kitchen, one could see the sweaty cooks below hovering over their pots and the beef hanging from above draped over plumbing pipes. A little “too much info” before one ate the national dish……….but dang if the light wasn’t beautiful! Nice blog, Eye.

Why is the image next to my above comment a cross-eyed green Pac Man? It IS kind of how I looked after eating the Peruvian national dish after seeing some of it hanging from plumbing pipes………………………….
