In todays world, people are staying home more then ever. Even to extent of giving up vacations for what is now called a “staycation“! How can you make your living space support a staycation? How do you create a sanctuary to unplug in and to enjoy a little bit of beauty™ at home? By expanding your living space outdoors wherever possible. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small space, or a large one. Creating a place to escape to that’s private, or, a place to share with many is one of the easiest ways to unwind. Last year I wrote about ways to create a living space outdoors. Now more then ever people are finding ways to spend a little time at home with nature.
Here in Sonoma County most of us are lucky to have the room to create outdoor sanctuaries that revolve around:
- A fireplace
- Water feature
- Dining area
- Outdoor entertaining
- Outdoor cooking
But even in some city homes there often is a small terrace, a roof garden or small backyard that can be converted to a outdoor oasis. What are the most important elements of an extended living space?
- A place to relax either to nap in or simply sit and read a book
- Surround yourself with the negative ions of greenery, whether in a pot or in the ground
- Eating outdoors is a simple pleasure for yourself, or for two or more
- Fill it with beauty and color
- Simply enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day, unwinding in your own private oasis
I believe that vacation is mostly a mindset. From the simple to the sublime, wouldn’t it be nice to create the space at home to have a mini vacation everyday?

The living spaces are beautiful Irene. Even though I have rooms in my house that I love, I prefer getting away for vacations. Last spring I created a beautiful outdoor space and I love having meals and sipping wine out there. I have had house guests (some local) who consider staying at my house for a few days is better than going away for the long weekend.

“Live without limits because nothing is impossible to you.”My favorite staycation would be a day or two at a local spa. I book a few treatments, enjoy the sauna and steam room, and reconnect with your mind, body and spirit. I always return totally refreshed and feeling great.

Thanks for stopping by Rachel. I agree, it’s always nice to get away, but in this day an age we often can’t as much as we would like to. It’s nice to have that vacation feel in our homes!
