As we enter the new year let’s look at how we enter our home. Entrances to our home are important on many levels:

- It’s the first thing people see when they arrive, therefore the first impression
- It’s how we travel from the outside to the inside, physically, emotionally and metaphorically
- It’s how we welcome our guests, and more importantly our Selves
- It’s how we make a statement as to who we are
- It’s how we transition into our space
The entryway is a major aesthetic. It can be a subtle accent or make a bold statement. It can be small or large, a place to pass through or a place to linger and get to know the space. In any case an entryway should blend with the structure and style of the building and draw the eye inward reflecting your personality and welcoming all who enter your home.
- The first and most important statement is the front door. it should be clean and painted or stained to accent rather then blend in to the house. The design should be pleasing to the structure and reflect you. If it is a single family home, landscaping leading up to the front door is also important. And, you will want it to be well lit.
- For small entries in particular a mirror reflects the outside you came from, enhances lighting, and shows areas to the side and behind you making the space feel more open. Or, use a landscape painting or photo that can draw you into the space, by following a stream or a road, or looking at an ocean, forest or rolling hills…all create a sense of vastness and openness.
- The placement of a beautiful rug can center the entry even if it is open to another room or the rest of the house. It can set the color tone for the rest of the space and it can also offer colors to choose from should you choose to paint your entry an an exciting accent color.
- Stairways directly across from the front door almost demand a person entering to go up. Since most primary living spaces are on the main floor you want the energy and the person to stay there. Ways to anchor the energy down is to place a small seating area underneath the staircase if space is available. This draws the person forward and invites them to stay on the first floor. If there is space, place a round table in front of the stairway. Or placing a table or bench off to the side with an important piece of art or a mirror will cause a person to stop and slow down.
- Let your personality shine through with favorite pieces of art and or family photos.
