I am a world traveler and have been lucky enough to have traveled to most of my dream spots. So decorating with maps is a natural, especially when it involves children, and inspiring their minds and evoking curiosity.
This past weekend I helped one of my clients get settled into their new home. Hanging pictures, settling furniture, debating the placement of all important accessories. But, by far, the most fun was hanging wallpaper map in their ten year old son’s room! When I first met with them, this young man had a simple and unexciting room. Spending time between two homes, he never really created a special space. In speaking with him I found out that he dreamed of being an anthropologist or an archeologist, with a specialty in Greece and Egypt. Quite an aspiration for a ten year old, and in his Mother’s and my opinion, an idea to foster.
The photo above is the map mural I ended up finding at Toy’s R Us at a great price! At 13 feet wide by 8 feet high, it covered one complete wall. Before we were even done, he was standing at the wall pin pointing where the Valley of the Kings was! I can see hours of travel dreams in his room! Why decorate with maps? They are colorful, fun, evoke a sense of adventure or inspire dreams for the future;they show places you’ve been to, and places to go. Here are some ideas to use maps in your decor:
- A wall mural, either painted or wall paper as I used above
- Recycle your old maps and pick up some novelty maps to use as wall paper for powder rooms, mudrooms and of course bedrooms
- Frame old antique maps, subway maps or celestial maps and hang as art
- And of course there are all kinds of map accessories for the home, from globes for the office or hiding bars, to map bowls, pillows, mugs, and of course old maps to line drawers, wrap gifts and lacquer on furniture.
