Bunk Beds-Sonoma Style™

Bunk Beds-Sonoma Style™

Lately I’ve worked on house plans for several of my clients second homes. These are homes where they come to relax, spend time with family and friends and often are visited by children who bring friends or several grandchildren from different households and a variety of age groups. While they want to be able to accommodate everyone comfortably, in general these are homes primarily for two. So how can they house their very important young guests comfortably? Whether you have a growing family in limited space, or, many guests only some of the time, sometimes you have to double up. Bunk Beds are a great solution! Originally found on trains, planes and boats, they were then adapted and used in bunk houses on ranches, lake cabins and  in smaller homes…anywhere there was limited space to house many. Whether simply for two:

Or in a room to house several:

Bunk beds work! I’ve had great fun creating bunks for my clients homes that also allow for a lot of privacy as their bunk rooms will sleep boys and girls, from age 4 through teenager years. By creating curtained bunks, each bed can house a shelf or shelves for personal items such as books, alarm clocks, phones and pictures; an individual reading lamp; hooks at the foot of the bed to hang their wet towels, swim suits or other necessary clothing. And, each bed can be closed off privately by simply drawing the curtains shut.

Bunks combined with old lockers that act as individual closets for each bunk owner solve the need for each youngster to have their own space, helps avoid squabbling and fighting over “my space” and adds a sense of adventure and fun to their vacation! These days with people down sizing and right sizing I can also see how bunk beds could work in smaller homes where children do have to share a room as well. And again, the curtained bunks create small private space for each child.

I can see bunk beds becoming more popular again…can you? Where would you use them? Enjoy the inspiration in the slide show below. Cheers!

These are extremely creative! I have gone to Duck, North Carolina for the past 5 years and have seen some creative solutions, but none like yours!

A lot of these bunks are custom designed to fit a space. Quite simple really, revolving around a standard twin, or a long twin mattress. For my clients their handyman can take care of it if we are not doing a major renovation and then have the contractor do it.
Thanks so much for stopping by. Pleasure to answer your question

  3. Thanks Irene for your reply..Well, I need to contact directly to contractor isn’t it? I think the major work for me to choose a perfect design and shape which fits in my kids bedroom. The renovation can takes more money and that is why I feel it is better to buy a new one. The contractor will do it according to the suggestion provided but the major issue is to choose design where in this case you can help me. Can contact me on my e-mail.Thanks..

You wouldn’t need a contractor for this unless it’s going into a space that needs to be renovated. If you are fitting it into an existing space all you need is the design of the bed and you can have a carpenter or handy man make it for you. I’ll email you.

  4. Hey, Irene thanks for the reply again. I got your mail today and thanks for the excellent suggestion. I will send you the whole scan documents on your mail by tomorrow. Is that fine for you? The one thing I also would like to know that can I send some photos of my kids room so that you can suggest me properly? Thanks a lot again..
