The Holiday’s are over and the decorations are put away. So, now what can you do to ward off the winter blues, add some spark to your home, uplift your mood and set the Energetics of Your Space™ for the New Year?
After the holiday’s your home is looking a bit dowdy. So like getting a new haircut or a makeover to uplift yourself, it is necessary to refresh and uplift your home. Why do we want to do this? Well, your home is what supports your sense of well being and peace of mind everyday! And, what better time to re-fresh then at the start of a New Year to set the tone. Here are 5 easy and inexpensive ways improve your home today: 1. Add Color: Add some colorful accessories to your rooms to brighten up those dark winter days.
2. Amp up the Wattage: In the dark of winter there is nothing like shining a bit of light during these drab, grey days. Amp up the wattage in your lamps; add a few new "spot" lights to highlight dark corners, favorite paintings, and book shelves that hold prized collections. Turn on the light!
3. Re-Energize Your Rooms: move your furniture around. Things that never move are stagnant and create stagnant energy. By simply moving things and cleaning out, energy will be able to move freely again. Sometimes, simply moving your furniture to clean can be enough to move the energy. Re-arranging the furniture can also make your space and the things in it look new again. It’s amazing how we often no longer see our things in the repetitiveness of everyday life. Moving things around creates “new” energy and is refreshing and uplifting.4. De-Clutter and Organize: If your space is cluttered, chances are your mind is cluttered, and if there is no empty space there is no room for something new to come in. So throw out, clean up, give away, re-use and re-cycle what you no longer need. Between our busy lives and all the change in our world, the more organized we are the easier it is to function in our daily lives.
5. Send Yourself Flowers Monthly: There is nothing more delightful then receiving a beautiful bunch of flowers to brighten up your day and your week. Why not send yourself flowers every month? They are cheerful, colorful, smell good and always are a Little Bit of Beauty™ for your home!
What can you do in your home that will improve the energy of your space and support you in this New Year?

Fantastic ideas, Irene. I’m going to start sending myself flowers monthly!

This was a really cheery, uplifting post. You’ve inspired me to take some steps to lift our home even though we may well be moving some time soon and it doesn’t belong to us. I think we can still make it beautiful to live in as long as we are here. Thanks for these lovely tips. x

absolutely Fiona. A little story. Our dishwasher was broken when we moved in, but because we were going to renovate soon and I wanted a larger one we decided to wait…6 years later we finally got a dishwasher, choosing not to wait any longer. Sigh, time slips by very quickly, and you should enjoy every day. Feel good in your home for as long as you are there!

Great tips Irene…in fact I just finished reworking my girls’ bathroom and am working on mine now. All I did in my girls’ bathroom was repaint (walls and cabinet) and change the shower curtain. It makes such a difference though when I walk down the hall and catch a glimpse of the new bathroom.

I need some new cushions I think – and to move a couple of items around. I used to buy flowers all the time and I haven’t done for a while. Must start again I think. Might even plan painting our bedroom – I really dislike the color we inherited. Love color and had forgotten how much I do. Thanks Irene.

Love the colors! We could use more of that. Of course we could use more of just about everything you describe!

I love this post! I really wish that fuschia door would work on my house…think I’ll use some impatiens on the porch instead. Thanks for the great ideas!

Great post, great ideas, thanks much. I’ve always loved the monthly flowers thing, and some day, when finances loosen up, it’s going to be gift to myself. Flowers just make a room happy, IMO.
I like the light idea as well, it’s so dark this time of year.
We recently re-arranged our LR furniture, and hopefully today the rest of the decorations will be gone, then some toy purging. I think I’ll find some ways to add color to some of the rooms.
Thanks for the ideas.

Great tips. Love the pink door!

LOVE your ideas Irene!
In fact, Susan had wanted me to get the sitting room painted BEFORE the Holidays!!!
So that’s the first thing.

I love the photos you shared in your post and the great ideas to lift spirits; it’s a timely post for me because I have been putting my decorations away (still hanging on to the tree for one more night — I love the lights!) and feeling a little blue. So your ideas have inspired me to do something different — I would love to get some new pillows for my couches in the living room — have already made some changes with what is on our mantel, end tables, etc. which is good, but I think I need to add some more color. We repainted before the holidays, so that is happy!

Good for you Donna! Yes, I think it’s inevitable that the post holiday blues hit this time of year, so sprucing up and lightening up helps. And, of course being a color person, I think color is always a great idea. It really doesn’t have to be expensive! Good luck to you and Happy New Year

i love how you show us that just a few simple steps can transform a room..sometimes we put off doing things as it seems like such a big job..you showed us that this is not the case…little things can make all the difference
Thanks

Really lovely. A top notch post. I was toying with the idea of moving my bedroom around and now I’m committed. I love tips 3, 4, & 6 – and in my opinion de-cluttering is the number one thing anyone can do to refresh their space. It’s huge – and most people I know have way too much clutter. Thanks Irene.

You are absolutely right Julie…while I don’t organize or de-clutter as a service, it is the first thing I advise someone to do if they can only do one thing to improve the energy in their space!

Lovely post Irene, with delightful tips that anyone can use to give a fresh perspective to a stale feeling. My favorite thing to do for clients is to come in and move their furniture and rooms around. Its a terrific way not only to brighten and energize, but also to get rid of clutter people have been holding onto.

Very beautiful pictures along with great ideas! I always love change in our house, it brings great energy and the feeling of something “new” reflects a new awakening. It doesn’t really need an investment to make a change.
Lovely inspiration,

Great tips! Yes, color can really change your mood, as well as lighting. I never realize how dark the house is until the cloudy weather sets in…then it’s time to, as you say, “amp up the wattage”!

Wow, Irene!
This is so good! I will use many of your tips. I need to get organized around here. I’m working so much on my blog that I feel I don’t have time for the rest…
Thanks you for using one of my pictures. 🙂

Thanks, Irene, for these inspiring ideas. What struck me most strongly was “moving stuff around” to refresh a room. Great use of colorful photos to make your point. I didn’t see any before-after pictures, but I’m sure they would have had a great impact! Now I’m energized to reorganize several of our rooms, and I hope it’ll be so refreshing, that my wife won’t insist that I move ALL of it back to the way she liked it.
-
I never paid attention to the idea that re-arranging a room removes stagnant energy and re-energizes but you are so correct because it does work that way! ((I love re-arranging some of the rooms in my house, to the chagrin of my husband who stumbles around the first couple of mornings before he turns on the lights).
Your colors are fantastic. Very inspirational post and ideas.

Light and color! My two favorite things for a room… oh and flowers, so maybe 3 favorite things! I love your pictures as examples. It really makes your post come to life.
Because of your post, I’ve decided to change around my office! Thanks.

I love those flowers!
I am a huge light person too. I need to be in lots of natural light and hate drawing the blinds. Also growing my own flowers on my balcony makes me feel happy, plus burning scented candles and having a room with floor to ceiling book shelves.
