I LOVED the movie Hugo. Even though at this point we know it didn’t win best picture of the year at the Oscars, for me it was #1.
In this time of global upheaval I found it refreshing to see this beautiful, breathtaking and old fashioned fairytale. A story that appeals to the child with in us all, with enough interesting metaphor to capture the adult. And the stunning 3 D visuals of Paris and beyond were a feast for my eyes! I’m so happy I saw it at the theater in full magical 3D splendor.
But even with all the eye candy, it was the subtle, and not so subtle messages that had me clapping with delight. Here are just a few of the messages that stood out for me:
- We all need a “key” to unlock our hearts, don’t we?
- and…behind every secret there is a key, if we continue to look for one!
- This movie took place in a time when the world was shifting into an industrial society. I love the emphasis on the machinery, reflecting the times. Just like the emphasis on computers these days.
- Comparing humans to machines who sometimes needed repairing was a great analogy for me.
- I loved it when Hugo said that machines don’t come with spare parts, therefore every part counts, and has to mean something. Another analogy that all of us humans have a purpose and a part to play.
- I love the automaton as a symbol for our inner Self, that which has a message for us, has a secret we need to unlock, that with a heart will then lead us to the source. Perfect!
- I loved how Hugo watched daily life at the station through the windows of time. How many of us watch from the sidelines?
- And then when he slowly emerged to joined the world; and in the last scene became a part of events as opposed to an observer.
- Who didn’t love the dastardly station master played so well by Sacha Baron Cohen?
- PS…and have you noticed the color scheme throughout, which subtly emphasizes the reds and teals, as if the entire film were being seen through old-fashioned ’50s 3-D glasses? Obviously my favorite color for the year, and I love it combined with the gold.
