Dangerous Beauty-A Beautiful Movie!

Dangerous Beauty-A Beautiful Movie!

One of my favorite movies of all times is the 1998 Dangerous Beauty. Yes, it may be a bit sappy, but can I say…it’s one  of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen!

Being a visual junkie, an Italophile and a lover of beauty in all forms I must admit an obsession for this movie. I’ve already written about Coco Before Chanel, and Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky…also visually stunning movies. But I must say, this one rates #1 for me.

Everything about it is beautiful…

  • the filming-the camera work is divine
  • the women-as a straight woman even I think they are hot
  • the men-OMG…what can I say
  • the costumes-stunning, all of them
  • the poetry-taken from the published works of the real life heroine
  • Venice-always, there are no words
  • the music-perfect score

The movie is based on a true story. Starring my favorite bad boy actor Rufus Sewall, and the beautiful Catherine McCormick; with a stellar back up cast from Jacqueline Bisset, Oliver Platt, Naomi Watts, Fred Ward, Moira Kelley and Jake Weber.
The movie is adapted from the non-fiction book “The Honest Courtesan”, by Margaret Rosenthal about the life of Veronica Franco (McCormick), a courtesan in 16th century Venice who, due to class, is unable to marry the man she loves. With no other alternative, she becomes a courtesan, an occupation legally permitted to women of a certain rank.

Quite frankly, had I lived in that day and age I too might have preferred to be a courtesan. They were the most educated women in Italy, and often were the confidants and advisors to men of the highest rank. They actually had much more freedom then the wives. But I digress…
If you haven’t yet seen it, do yourself the favor and rent it…light the fire, pour yourself a glass of wine, call up your girlfriends…and…enjoy this visual treat!
Check out the trailer below. Have you seen the movie? Will you? What do you think so far? What’s your favorite all time beautiful movie? Let me know, I’m always looking for a new one.
