The “Shop Locally” campaigns cropping up nationally are an effort to build awareness of the importance of supporting your community through the loyalty you display to your locally owned businesses. It is also a grassroots effort to help re-build our economy, beginning in your own back yard, which will in turn, spread and help the economy nationally.
Why? When you shop locally, you invest in your community, in your neighbors and therefore in yourself. In this economic climate, the best return on investment is in local business. It is estimated that for every dollar you spend, twice as much will be re-invested in the community by a local store than a national store. And, you can help build this effort in your own community, by starting your neighborhood or towns very own campaign.
Ten reasons why to buy locally:
- Help strengthen your local economy
- Reduce climate change impacts, by reducing drive time and gas
- Support community groups that promote local businesses
- Local shops help keep your community unique
- More small shops create more jobs locally
- Knowing your local shop keepers often creates better customer service
- You’ll feel good investing in your community
- Shopping small helps you only buy what you need, not the hype
- It puts your taxes to good use
- It WILL help encourage local prosperity
- Make a decision to find and patronize a locally owned business whenever possible
- Dine at a local, independent restaurant
- When you shop online or through catalogs, it doesn’t contribute a dime to the local economy…so check for stores in your neighborhoods that provide the same products
- Give beautiful gifts, that are uniquely handcrafted by your neighbors
- Give gift certificates, not only to shops, but to local businesses for such services as: a haircut, a lawn mowed, an oil change, a massage
- Recommend your neighbor and their business (such as a realtor, designer, web service etc…) to family and friends…help spread their word
You have a choice of where you eat, shop and do business…please help support your local community this holiday season and all year around.
It’s a little bit of beauty for sure™!
