Imagine Christmas without consumerism, Thanksgiving without excess, New Years with pledges to help one another rather then resolutions to improve ourselves…and Valentines Day…
Well…Valentines Day could be THE holiday that celebrates ALL modes of love. Familial and romantic, spiritual and physical, the earth and the heavens…in fact, love for our entire global community. Why not change the day so it has meaning for everyone by making it a day about caring for others. Why not make Valentine’s Day about the spirit of agape and grace?
- Instead of sending pink valentines, practice a few acts of random kindness, for family, friends, or strangers. Whether it’s refilling the office coffee pot, giving someone in your family a foot rub, handing a stranger a quarter for the parking meter, smiling at a passer-by, sending a care package to a soldier in Afghanistan. Or, we could just simply call an old friend.
- Make Valentines Day the IOU day: IOU ten hours of service to a non-profit of your choice. IOU more QT. IOU an explanation. IOU what you want the way you want it. IOU my life, my devotion. IOU lunch. IOU a better world.
- For loved ones practice simplicity: Spend time together performing everyday acts…cook your favorite dinner together over a glass of wine, visit the first place you went together, look at your wedding pictures or places that you’ve traveled, visit an aging parent or an ailing friend, watch the sun set. Just give the gift of time, the gift of your Self.
What other ways can you think of to celebrate a day of agape love? Post them here in the comment section and share them with our readers!
Those of you who know me know that I am visual, so to honor the spirit of LOVE, I wanted a way to “see” it…and not in a trite way. The closest thing I found was this song and video by Hip Hop artist and international Christian preacher, Jaeson Ma. What ever your beliefs, this video is filled with a message of selfless LOVE!
I recommend watching it full screen to see a celebration of the beauty of LOVE!
