Only in Paris could you find Metro travel high style! A train on the French RER line has been decorated a la Versailles following a partnership between the rail company and the palace.
The subway train which travels from Paris to the Château has been given a palatial face lift to put travellers in the right frame of mind BEFORE their visit to the magnificent UNESCO site.
Ornate paintings and golden sculptures line the aisles and even the ceilings are intricately designed. Other attractive improvements include the creation of a mock library in one of the carriages. An incredible example of tromp l’oeil.
The refurbishments are designed to evoke memories of seven different areas of the royal chateau and its grounds, including the Hall of Mirrors, the Gallery of Battles and Marie-Antoniette’s estate. The changes, which were funded by the Palace of Versailles, involved layering the interior walls of the train with a high-tech plastic film.
From now until the end of August hostesses from the Tourist Office of Versailles and SNCF agents will travel on trains to educate tourists on the Palace of Versailles or the different attractions to discover in Paris. 50,000 people per day travel on the RER C line which this train operates on, and whether its being used by those travelling to work or tourists, the look of the train is bound to improve traveller’s moods and encourage them to visit the Versailles Palace.
Rail company SNCF have plans for five more trains to be decorated in the same film decoration technique by the end of 2012 – talk about traveling in style!
I don’t know how many times I’ve visited Versailles, but next time it will be on this train for sure, and you? And when you get there…well…travel vicariously through the video below!
