Mid Century Classics-Hot Again

Mid Century Classics-Hot Again

OK, I’m may be a bit late to the game, but I am definitely falling for Mad Men and Mid Century Furniture…again! The furniture that is.

Having been born in 1957, some of my first memories of my family home was with what we now call mid century classics.

My Mom & Dad in their first studio apt. where I was born

These days, the sleek lines, open and light feel, and smaller sizes are looking good in modern homes, and smaller cottages. I also love it mixed up in industrial spaces which are trending in urban environments.
Of course, there are places where this furniture has never gone out of style, like in Palm Springs. There, with their abundance of 50’s homes, they have the added advantage of acquiring original pieces from estates, and re-selling them in updated form.
Mid Century classics look good to me, today, in several ways:
  • some of the original wood casegoods look clean and interesting and very light

  • in some small cottage homes I actually love the kitsch/retro look

retro wall paper, colors, and mid century pieces create a kitsch look-image via Design Sponge

  • some of the classic pieces such as the Saarinen tablesand chairs, I love mixed with contemporary as well as antique furniture!

  • and, I’m loving some of the rooms that use these pieces in a whole new and current way

Of course Mad Men may be driving the look to the masses, but remember, a classic is always a classic. And some of these pieces will never go out of style!

For a more in depth view of Mid Century at it’s best, check out the video below. And tell me…do you remember this look the first time around? And what do you think of it becoming a classic? I invite you to leave me a comment below, I always like hearing from you!

They were pretty hip back in their day Tammi. I have some other pics of their space, but not scanned. Oh well. Some day I’ll get around to that. Thanks for stopping by

LOVE Madmen and I love mid-century. The look is kitsch, fun, clean, and it blends (oddly enough) with other styles if ya work it right. I mean really how bad can “limed oak and atomic” be? As far as fashion goes. For me? It stopped back there with Jackie Kennedy’s pill-box hats and Grace Kelly’s gowns.

I’m with you Alexandra…love the clothes from that era. Not so keen on the smoking, drinking, and playing around that went on then and that we see in Mad Men, but the clothes, the set…well, that’s a whole different deal!

Irene–your parents are a very handsome couple–I see where you inherited your great looks!!
It is fun to revisit that mid-century look–my Mom didn’t have very many pieces but my friends had their homes decorated in that style–interesting and what goes around comes around–what is old is new etc etc–I can see you using quite a bit of that style in your interior work–your posts are so great to read–Have a nice weekend!!!

Thanks Lyn, Yes, my parents were quite debonair. When I sent them this link to see the photo I used my father emailed back that this was the sofa that I was conceived on! They lived in a studio, and this was their bed…also, he told me that my Mother knitted the argyle socks he was wearing. Go Mom! I don’t think she knitted anything since! Good stories. I hear more every time I post a pic. Good stuff. Thanks for stopping by!

Absolutely loved the video. I am obsessing over the suitcases as shelves!! I may have to attempt that! There are so many fantastic elements to enjoy!
