I must admit, I have a new obsession. It’s called:
About 2 weeks ago in an effort to clean out, organize and downsize I threw out about 18 years of magazine swipes…all neatly filed by room or category…plus, about 10 years of favorite magazines. GASP…Yes, I really did.
I almost hyperventilated while decluttering. Being a visual person I LOVE inspirational pictures and had created quite a library for both research and presentations. But the truth is, I haven’t created a physical board or used my magazines or swipes for clients in at least a couple of years. Everything I do now is on the computer. Between google images, on-line magazines, interior design blogs and my portfolio, I can create all my presentations as a power point directly on my computer. Literally the same week I did this a friend recommended Pinterest (Interest with a P in front). This was the third time I heard about it, and while I had already signed up for it, I hadn’t done anything about it yet. So I started checking it out, and now…I am addicted. Pinterest is a virtual pin board, or creative visualization board. What can you do on it?
- Collect ideas to redecorate your home
- Plan your wedding or upcoming special event
- Find and share your style
- Save information, inspiration and ideas
- Save your recipes
- Share taste and interests with people you love
The way it works is:
- Ask for an invitation or have a friend invite you to join Pinterest.
- Set up a profile-it’s free!
- Set up the categories or boards you think you would file ideas in…you can always add more.
- Add the “pin it” button as a bookmark so you can pin from all over the web.
- Peruse through the categories listed like-Home Decor, Fashion, Entertaining, Weddings, Technology etc…
- If you see a photo you like, you can repin it to your board.
- Ultimately you will put together your very own visualization board for what ever is of interest to you!
- Share thoughts and ideas with followers and friends.
- I can digitally maintain my catalog of ideas and inspiration for projects, just for fun, or to remember an idea.
- I can begin a board for my clients and put together a collection of ideas that is personal for them.
- It allows potential clients to go through my library to see how I “see” things and a bit about how I think of space and find out who I am.
- It allows my clients to set up their own boards for me to see what attracts them, and incorporate their ideas into my designs, helping to create a space that is truly reflective of them!
- I also create my own creative visualization boards for my life and things that interest me. Like remodel ideas for my own home and garden!

Love your boards! I’m new to Pinterest so this may be a user error on my part but when I clicked on several of the links, it did not go to the original post. Instead it went to the site. Is there something I’m doing incorrectly? Thanks!

Hi Monique, thanks for stopping by. I’m not sure what you clicked on…If you are clicking on some of the links here in this post (the blue words) then it would take you to the pinterest site. Is that what you did?

Hi Irene, I think the problem is that when some folks post, they fail to open the post that contains the pic. So for instance, if I go to the home page of a blog that has 5 different articles posted with pics, and pin from the home page instead of opening the article containing the pic, my link will be invalid if I return to the site six months later because that photo will no longer be on the home page. To find the photo, I’d have to scroll through pages and pages until I arrive at the photo pinned.
Clear as mud right???
To sum up…the problem is not on your end. The problem begins with the originator of the post.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you for this site! I have the same problem with accumulating magazines because of their pictures, articles, inspirations, etc, I never want to throw them out! But now with this site it’ll make my boards much easier to make, manage, and be space efficient.
