Lavender-Color Trend for the Home

Lavender-Color Trend for the Home

A well-loved Mediterranean herb, lavender has been associated with cleanliness since Romans first added it to their bathwater. In fact, the name comes from the Latin lavandus, meaning to wash. Now, lavenders in all shades are  washing through out homes as accents and in full color!

Most often when thinking of lavender fields we think of Provence. However, here in Northern California’s Wine Country we also have fields of lavender and it graces gardens everywhere. It’s the scent and the vibrant color that first grabs your attention. While most lavender we see is dried and therefore a more subdued color, a field of lavender is an explosion of purple on a blanket of silvery-green.

Lavender is also the number one aromatherapy scent in the world. It is said to help relieve muscle pain, migraines and other headaches. It is used cosmetically and  is best known for relaxing brain waves and reducing stress.

I personally think the aromatherapy benefits as well as the energy of the color itself infuses interiors when we use this color in design. We are seeing lavender used from bold purple tints,

to soft washes of pale, elegant and feminine shades of lilac and lavender.

And, all shades work as accents in accessories, drapes, chairs, art etc.

The color purple as defined by my favorite color blog, Sensational Color helps to:

  • Uplifts
  • Calms the mind and nerves
  • Offers a sense of spirituality
  • Encourages creativity

And pale lavenders add a feeling of:

  •  femininity
  • grace
  • and elegance
As we move into fall 2011, watch for soft shades to appear in clothing as well, here from Christian Dior and Missoni, a couple of my favorites!

I guess it all depends if you want a blue lavender or a pink lavender. Pick one base color to work with when picking your lavender. and then add a touch of grey to cool down and so it doesn’t look like a little girl’s room. You can do it! For sure.

  3. I am liking the color lavender more and more. I have been thinking about getting a lavender plant for our place as well. I didn’t know that is helped with migraines. That is amazing!
