Green ReModeling in Bodega Bay

Green ReModeling in Bodega Bay

Last year I mentioned that I had picked up a project out in Bodega Bay and was getting ready for my presentation. Well we are finally in the midst of construction. I termed the project “Sonoma Country meets the Coast, in a barn like atmosphere with the sound of the ocean”.

barn like atmosphere with primary colors for fun!

My clients have used this home for years as their “get away” place and have enjoyed it tremendously. But, like most home in the north harbor it was built in the mid 70’s and was just plain tired. Plus, their children are older and in college, coming up with guests of their own when their parents weren’t in the house, and, in a future that is getting closer, that of retirement, the house will get more use. Besides updating and refreshing their home, and making it user friendly for more and more people, the main view of the ocean was located in the master bedroom. Since 98% of their time was spent sleeping through the night the view wasn’t really seen. Plus, it was a bit awkward to bring their guests with their cocktails into the master to watch the sunset. So, our intention is to take back the view, allowing them to see it from their living, dining and kitchen space, where they spend most of their daytime hours…and,I am really excited as we are remodeling as green as possible. We are staying within the footprint of the original house, not changing the outside at all. We are re-using red wood siding from the walls we are taking down, keeping the fairly new appliances, buying salvaged wood for the new flooring and using LED lighting throughout the home. Just to wet your appetite, here are some of the inspiration photos from my presentation. We are opening the kitchen, using the existing lower cabinets and adding where necessary from current cabinets…rift cut natural oak uppers with a brightly painted yellow island in the middle!  Soapstone countertops in matte with oiled finish, and rustic looking barn doors made out of reclaimed redwood from the walls we are taking down, and mixed with white rift cut oak to cover the laundry area and the pantry.

We are also going ahead with the wet bath that I wrote about in an earlier post. A bit less wood siding, but basically like the photo. The wet bath is for a shower and private toilet room at the end of a hall-like master bath.  It is separated from the sink and bathtub area by frosted glass for privacy, but which will also let in natural light. Situated in front of a window with a view of the ocean is a soaking tub. The master bath is separated from the bedroom with a barn door to slide across when privacy is desired, but allows for the ocean view from the bed when open.

We just finished putting in the skylight! inspiration courtesy of Nicholas Tye Arch.

And then of course the last really fun element we added which my clients kids like is the bunk room to sleep them now with their friends, and down the road for my clients grandchildren. There are two Sets of bunk beds, each with their own reading light and two shelves for personals such as plugs for phone charger, ipad etc.  I’d put a separate curtain up for each of the four so someone can sleep when the rest are up…or for privacy. Aqua, navy and bright yellow is the color story in this room.

As for the rest of the house, we found salvage wood floors from Heritage Salvage Co. in Petaluma, which will  be bleached and light as a balance to the redwood walls. Most of the redwood walls will be lit both up to the soaring 2 story ceilings and down to the floor from a mid height beam with LED strip lighting. By doubling up on the strips there won’t be the spotted Christmas tree lighting effect, but rather a soft wash along the whole wall for ambiance. All lights are on dimmers. We will be re-using all of the appliances and my clients are beginning to collect old salvage pieces to accessorize with. The contractor on the job is Marko Castro from Green Arc Builders. He’s terrific, and so great in coming up with beautiful and creative solutions to challenges that arise as they do with any remodel. I look forward to completing this project and showing you the results. And, I look forward to many more green remodel projects out in Bodega Bay!

What do you think of green remodeling, and would you make the effort to do so on your next renovation project? Leave me a comment, I’d love to know. Cheers!

This is so interesting. I am not familiar with rift cut — is it a rough cut or a particular angle? At any rate the kitchen looks like one I would certainly enjoy if I had a vacation house.

Thanks for your kind words…and yes, I too would love to have this kitchen any time anywhere! I guess I get to live out my fantasies on my projects.

Rift cut is the direction you cut the wood. There is a whole different grain then “normal” oak. And when it’s white oak it has a bit of a grey cast over gold, so it looks weathered. At least it does to me!

Gorgeous. Love the barn look in this place.

  3. Beautiful skylight in the restroom – we have one like that in ours too and I love it because turning on the light too early in the morning hurts my eyes when they haven’t adjusted yet – the natural light is much better for me! 🙂
