Mudrooms Make Life Easier

Mudrooms Make Life Easier

The first space you enter upon walking through the door of your home is most likely NOT the front door, but rather through the garage or a back door of some sort. It is the place you put down your keys and bags, take off your shoes and jacket, and breathe. This space is important functionally, but it’s also your personal greeting into your home, so the more organized and beautiful it is, the better you will feel after a long day.

When I lived on the east coast and midwest, almost every home had a mudroom. Here on the west coast, not many homes do. Whats with that? I don’t care what the normal weather is, it’s always great to enter a home and not worry about the mess you, your pets or your kids bring in…AND it should look good. I am a big proponent of mudrooms for that very reason! Mudrooms can be located off the garage, by a back entry or the door you and your family most often enter. It can be simply a space to get out of your outdoor gear and shoes, or combined with:

  • a laundry room

  • animal care area (in the country I like to include dog washing sinks or showers…after all, the mud or sand can stay there and out of the main house!)

  • small computer space
  • coat closets and shoe racks
  • extra storage or pantry space

So, even though it may not be your main entryway, the idea is that your back entrance not only be beautiful, but truly functional for you and your family. To that end, I am an advocate of mudrooms. What about you? Do you have a mudroom in your home? If you renovated, would you think of adding one? Let me know your thoughts, I’d love to hear!

In the meantime, check out the video below for some ideas and inspiration. Cheers from Sonoma Wine country!

What information are you looking for Karen? It’s a custom built mudroom for the space?

Shoe racks that are made from hardened steel are great and i always use them on my home. They really last longer compared to wooden shoe racks. .”.:,

    Kind thanks
