Lilly Pulitzer-at Home

Lilly Pulitzer-at Home

Y’all know I LOVE color, right? So of course I’m intrigued by the new furniture line coming out this summer with the traditionally vivid colors, prints and patterns by lifestyle setter and icon Lilly Pulitzer. Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau (born Lillian Lee McKim on November 10, 1931), better known as Lilly Pulitzer, is a NYC socialite who turned Palm Beach Juice Stand owner in the late 50’s. After creating some gloriously colored shifts with conversational prints to cover the occupational hazards of the fruit stains that came with her job, her customers were so enamored by them, she had her dressmaker create extra “Lillys” to sell at the store.

After she divorced and remarried, Lilly Rousseau continued operate her company under the Lilly Pulitzer name. Her shifts were worn by everyone, including dear friend and First Lady Jackie Kennedy and her daughter Caroline, who were photographed for “Life Magazine” sporting the Lilly Pulitzer shift dress, which helped popularize the line. As her boarding school pals moved across country, they continued to open Lilly Pulitzer stores and thus created an empire.

In 1984 Lilly retired and closed down her clothing line as she felt she wasn’t having fun anymore. However, in 1993 it was revived and the Lilly Pulitzer empire now includes shoes, jewelry, mens clothing, home goods, with new introductions every day such as:

  • Fashion accessories from eyewear to scarves
  • tabletop
  • bedding from Garnet Hill

  • fabrics
  • and, Ta Da…furniture coming this summer 2011Known for her yummy colors and fun prints, the “Lilly’s” haven’t changed much in the past half century, and live on forever as they expand across product lines creating a bright and cheery lifestyle look. I admire Lilly for her contribution to women everywhere. Like Chanel, she bucked the dress code of her socially affluent world, and rebelled against the ridged style and inhibitions of the day. She did away with such things as wearing corsets and panty hose and that, along with her imagination, her appreciation of all that was different, and her love of family has made her the icon she is today!

She will continue to be an inspiration for all of us who lead colorful lives and love her Little Bits of Beauty™! Who inspires you in your daily life?

  9. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter
to be actually something that I think I would never understand.
It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
