Spring Green For Your Home

Spring Green For Your Home

In going through my twittersphere this morning I noticed several comments about the abundance of great greens at the High Point Market this Spring. With the amount of rain we’ve had here in Northern California, and now, a very sunny spring, I must admit that fresh spring greens have been looking good to my eye too, whether touches of it, or whole rooms!

The color green brings to mind:

  • nature
  • fertility
  • spring
  • growth & renewal
  • life
  • and here in the United States, money.

Via Sensational Color, Green: occupies more space in the spectrum visible to the human eye than most colors, and is second only to blue as a favorite color. Green is the pervasive color in the natural world, making it an ideal backdrop in interior design because we are so used to seeing it everywhere. It’s fun, it’s fresh and I’m loving it. I truly like using green shades in our home decor because in general they:

  • soothe us
  • relax us mentally, as well as physically
  • help alleviate depression, nervousness, and anxiety
  • and, offer us a sense of renewal, self-control, and harmony

All great attributes to enhance in our homes in this crazy, fast paced world we live in.

Green is also considered a balancing color and encourages emotional stability, purity and calmness. It is connected to the heart chakra and is thought to facilitate emotional issues such as love, trust, compassion and forgiveness. An imbalance of the heart chakra is said to promote mistrust, jealousy, insecurity and a fear of relationships.

Color experts say that green has been known to lower blood pressure, helps to balance metabolism, encourages growth, eases insomnia and acts as an aphrodisiac. Bottom line it is a refreshing color and helps create harmony.  Green is also the ONLY color that goes together with all shades of itself…it’s amazing! (thank you Lindsay for that one!)

These clean greens look new, and best to me, when they play off of bright white and mixed with pop shades of orange, yellow, hot pinks, other greens and turquoise! Sounds like a happy palette, doesn’t it? And part of the change we are seeing to color in the 21st Century.

Notice that instead of the natural “eco” greens we’ve seen to date such as olive, basil, off or muddy greens, this years greens are clean, fresh and very vibrant. From leaf, to grass to spring greens look for green to literally pop up both for the home as well as on the runways.

What about you? Can you see adding a bit of green to your decor or your wardrobe? How do the examples above make you feel? I invite you to leave a comment, I love to know peoples perceptions of color. And, if you’d like a bit of help adding green to your decor, give me a call. I’d love to work with you to spring up your home!

Love this, Irene. And I love green. And it’s good to know that it fosters emotional stability, purity, and calmness. Never can have too much of that! 🙂 I once read that green is the only color that goes with all shades of itself – you can mix different greens together. I don’t know if that is true… To me, green feels happy and comforting, hopeful and enthusiastic. It is life-affirming. Thank you for honoring green.

I love that Lindsay, that all greens can work together. I tried it out with my paint decks and you know what? It’s right! I’ll have to go back and insert into the post!

Great post on the current direction for green, Irene. I particularly am attracted to using warm green and cool green in the same scheme at the moment. Thanks for quoting my site and the link out.

I took a pic out of a magazine for wall colors, it was a clean, fresh, clear green called ‘Green /Ground, Farrow & Ball. I need to get a F&B fan deck. Either way check out the view from this Nob Hill pied-a-terre on my fb page.

Loving green as well. And love Lindsay’s factoid! And as for the fashion connection, I just bought a long pleated Michael Kors grass green skirt that I had fallen in love with when I saw it on the runway last fall but was too chicken to special order then. Now it feels right and you know what? I got the last one in my size in the entire country!! So I guess everyone is loving green as well!!

Great examples of green. I really like the way that plant bring green into the room along with texture and freshen the air.

  9. Green is my favorite color, I definitely do find it soothing, I need to incorporate more of it into my decor- I already have quite a few green pieces of clothing, but I’d like to put more of it in my room. A friend of mine has a bathroom that looks like it belongs in the Emerald City! So I can agree with you that all shades of green go together, she probably has about 15-20 different varieties of green in there and they all tie in together beautifully.
