In keeping with the Earth Day theme of this week, here is Habana Outpost, a small restaurant that is making a difference each and every day!

Habana Outpost is the brain child of Sean Meenan, owner and operator of this very green restaurant in downtown Fort Greene-Brooklyn. It’s the first solar powered restaurant in New York and they take the environmental movement very seriously. The restaurant, which flows around the solar panels, has many other green features such as:

  • No trendy decor for this place, just simple everyday pieces to create this fun atmosphere

  • Collecting rain water to clean the courtyard, water the plants and flush their green toilet
  • The kitchen is in a reclaimed and restored mail truck
  • They make smoothies with a human powered bike blender

  • Their cutlery is made out of potato skins
  • Their plates out of re processed sugar cane, their cups out of corn
  • They’ve created a garden that grows much of their greens and herbs that they use for cooking and give out to the community. The gardens are taken care of by the kids in the community
  • They are open from just before Earth day until October 27th when it get’s too cold to run the outdoor restaurant
  • Their prices make it available for everyone
  • They involve their community in the running of and for ideas for this very popular restaurant as well as hold many community events from movie night to children’s craft days

  • They grow their own greens and herbs which they use as well as give out to the community. The gardens are taken care of by the kids in the community
  • Their food is delicious and they just want people to have fun, which they do!

Sean is the owner of three restaurants, the first on Prince St. in NYC, called Cafe Habana, his second, the outpost in Fort Greene and his recently opened restaurant in Malibu, CA. I think we need one here in Sonoma County, perhaps at our very own Sebastopol Barlow Project? And I’m available to help with decor…just saying.
