I AM-the Documentary

I AM-the Documentary

I was lucky enough to catch Oprah’s interview with Tom Shadyac about his documentary I AM. I AM is an utterly engaging and entertaining non-fiction film that poses two practical and provocative questions:

What’s wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better?

The filmmaker behind the inquiry is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such comedy blockbusters as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” “The Nutty Professor,” and “Bruce Almighty.”   However, in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening from his prior life of excess and greed, and to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in our world.

The main takeaway’s I got from Oprah’s interview with Shadyac, while not new, are never-the-less worth repeating and are:

  • We are all connected
  • The highest societal value is cooperation, not competition
  • Humans actually function better and remain healthier when expressing positive emotions, such as love, care, compassion, and gratitude
  • “St. Augustine said, ‘Determine what God has given you, and take from it what you need; the remainder is needed by others.’
  • The heart, not the brain, may be man’s primary organ of intelligence
  • Follow your hearts greatest desire

Oprah stressed as did Shadyac, that this in not a movie to tell you what’s wrong with your life and what you need to give up, but rather one to set you thinking and to begin a conversation. I believe that in this amazing time of change we can all be change agents in our own life and in our fields of expertise. I AM can perhaps stimulate us to begin.

“I AM isn’t as much about what you can do, as who you can be.  And from that transformation of being, action will naturally follow.”

So let’s begin the conversation…what’s wrong with our world? And, What can you do to make it better?

As an interior designer and presenter of beauty in all forms, I feel that it is my responsibility as a change agent to create beauty that uplifts people. To make a contribution to the way we live and our housing industry as a whole, by writing about, and supporting reflective living™ and the tenants of SLOW in our homes. Right sizing is the biggest trend I see in our future. What about you?

What’s your commitment and contribution? I’d love to hear. After all change can be a little bit of beauty™ for sure if we choose to make it so!

Thank you Oprah for turning me onto this movie, and thank you Tom for sharing your questions and your journey…you are both change agents in our world today.

I am are the two most important words in existence. If we all embrace I am then we all raise our vibration and the world will be full of love not fear. I cannot wait to see this

I so agree with you Louise. I AM there! In my meditation practice I use the word OM, which translates into I AM. Love that vibration. I will be seeing this week end and can’t wait. Enjoy, we’ll have to share thoughts. Thanks for stopping by

It was my priviledge as well to watch Oprah’s interview with Tom Shadyac on his new documentary. I really appreciate Tom sharing his experiences and thoughts about what we can do to make the world a better place. Now the challenge is how to integrate these concepts – and the stirring in all of our hearts as we collectively start thinking in this direction – into our lives in healthy ways. Perhaps enlightenment comes from the day to day practice of living well with each other, ourselves and nature.

It is rare to encounter a professional in whom you might have some confidence. In the world of today, nobody truly cares about showing others the solution in this matter. How fortuitous I am to have found such a wonderful web page as this. It truly is people like you that make a real difference these days through the ideas they discuss.
