Downsizing & Rightsizing-via Santa Rosa Interior Design

ALERT, THIS NEW TREND IS GROWING: The buzz word is downsizing, I prefer to call it right sizing.  For some, in fact, it is going smaller.  Many of the baby boomers are now empty nesters who are getting older and want to live  a simpler and easier lifestyle.  They are in fact down sizing, whether it’s a smaller home, or, fewer of them.

Also, there  is a core group of young first time homebuyers who’s sensibility is to live a simpler way of life. They are rebelling against the age of consumerism and want to live a life that harkens back to their Grandparents. This includes smaller homes, vegetable gardens, co-op buying and living. I see this quite a bit here on our Northern California coast.

And for others, there is a desire to create a space that flows with the way they really live their life, and truly fits their needs; not some cookie cutter McMansion created by a developer as a business investment.  I call this right sizing and it is part of the Slow Home movement. Some signs of this are: Continue reading “Downsizing & Rightsizing-via Santa Rosa Interior Design” »

7 Tips to Create Great Tablescapes

Tables…they serve so much more then just a functional space to set something on. They can become works of art!  They can be a place to display who you are and what you are interested in to all that enter your home. Earth Building-Nader Khalili (1936-2008)

For me, true inspiration comes from nature and from ideas that can transform lives. I came across Cal-Earth, the  California institute of earth art and architecture through a face book post and am…inspired.

Here come the Brits-via Santa Rosa Interior Design

Besides seeing a lot of vintage signs in interior design photos, I’ve also notice the use of the British Flag as a decor motif. Hmmmmmm…I really don’t know what I think of that, but must admit that it looks kind of cool. But, is it a color statement? A nationality statement? Or a political statement? Or could it be because of the latest lens on the Royal Family?

The first time I saw it was as a rug by Vivienne Westwood, the quirky and very talented British fashion designers. Her rug has shown up  in many magazines, books and is all over the internet. It “looks” good in this setting:

Certainly I think it’s easier to understand when it’s hung on the wall. It then becomes a bit of art:    Continue reading “Here come the Brits-via Santa Rosa Interior Design” »
