Lilly Pulitzer-at Home
Posted by Irene Turner in Color, Interior Design & Renovation, Personal Style & Well being on May 26, 2011
Y’all know I LOVE color, right? So of course I’m intrigued by the new furniture line coming out this summer with the traditionally vivid colors, prints and patterns by lifestyle setter and icon Lilly Pulitzer.
Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau (born Lillian Lee McKim on November 10, 1931), better known as Lilly Pulitzer, is a NYC socialite who turned Palm Beach Juice Stand owner in the late 50′s. After creating some gloriously colored shifts with conversational prints to cover the occupational hazards of the fruit stains that came with her job, her customers were so enamored by them, she had her dressmaker create extra ”Lillys” to sell at the store.
After she divorced and remarried, Lilly Rousseau continued operate her company under the Lilly Pulitzer name. Her shifts were worn by everyone, including dear friend and First Lady Jackie Kennedy and her daughter Caroline, who were photographed for “Life Magazine” sporting the Lilly Pulitzer shift dress, which helped popularize the line. As her boarding school pals moved across country, they continued to open Lilly Pulitzer stores and thus created an empire. Continue reading “Lilly Pulitzer-at Home” »
the Color Orange-Just 4 Fun!
Posted by Irene Turner in Color, Interior Design & Renovation on May 24, 2011
Orange-a combo of Red & Yellow-is one of my favorite colors, and that’s saying a lot for a color lover like me. I love orange because it is the color of joy and enthusiasm. It is vibrant and extroverted in feel. From nature, to the runways, and always in our homes, orange is just plain fun.
There is also something about the saturated, bold color of orange that screams warm weather to me. Perhaps because it’s such a hot hue itself. A close relative of red, it often sparks more controversy than any other hue. There is usually strong positive or negative, love or hate, association with orange.
Sometimes used as just as an accessory to pop the colors in a room… Continue reading “the Color Orange-Just 4 Fun!” »
Beauty

”To love beauty is to see light.” Victor Hugo
“The heart suffers when it cannot see and touch beauty, but beauty is not shy it is synonymous with existence.” Hafiz
People often ask me why I love talking about beauty. To me, there’s no doubt that beauty uplifts your spirit and your mood! It can stop you in its tracks and allows you, to relax, breathe, and re-balance your self in that moment. It is inspirational!
Once thought to be an indulgence, I now believe that beauty is crucial in this world to energize, nourish and uplift yourself. In design I am always inspired by beauty in any form, and I believe that we must approach beauty wholistically, looking at life as a whole. To this end we need to see, enjoy and create beauty through: Continue reading “Beauty” »
5 Reasons Small Space is IN!
Posted by Irene Turner in Architecture, Interior Design & Renovation on May 17, 2011
You know what they say, “It’s not the size that counts, but what you do with it”.
One of the things I like best about working in Interior Design and Renovation is turning small space into functional AND beautiful space. I don’t think it has to be mutually exclusive. There is nothing more satisfying then finding a way to organize the things we need, and create comfort in a room or a corner that seems challenging for most people to visualize.
Plus, it’s a trend! These day’s in the design world words like “down-size,” right size,” simplify” and “low carbon footprint” are making their way around our stratosphere. From converting walk in closets into home office’s, the 4th small bedroom into a 2nd bath, and creating a more functional kitchen by opening it up into the dining room, or simply building small to begin with…small is in.
Most of us have, and think we need, much more space then we actually use. In our new economy and with the housing meltdown we have been give an invitation (a requirement really) for reinvention in the way we live, and the houses we live in.
But, smaller is not just about economics. Smaller homes are also commonly associated with empty-nesters and retirees looking for smaller spaces after the kids have moved out. And with the sheer number of baby boomers moving through our system now, it is no wonder homes are trending smaller.
Some of the advantages to downsizing or right sizing are: Continue reading “5 Reasons Small Space is IN!” »
Earth Building-Nader Khalili (1936-2008)

For me, true inspiration comes from nature and from ideas that can transform lives. I came across Cal-Earth, the California institute of earth art and architecture through a face book post and am…inspired.
Founded in 1991 by Nader Khalili, world-renowned Iranian-American architect, author, humanitarian, teacher, and innovator, Cal-Earth’s mission is guided by three principles: Continue reading “Earth Building-Nader Khalili (1936-2008)” »
